Clear blue sky, warm gentle sunshine and gentle breeze – perfect day for a lunch outside.

I was in the mood for having a salad. Wonder if it is a fiber craving? Either that or I am going nuts. So looking at the menu, I scan for something with a salad and that isn’t too heavy on the stomach.

Quiche of the day ($9.50) – egg, onion, sun-dried tomatoes & bacon; served with sides of chips & salad. Perfect option I thought – good mix of protein from the egg, fibre from the salad, and … uh hm … fat from the chips.

Quiche, salad & chips

The quiche had a lightly browned exterior crust, which still had a little crispy’ness to it (though clearly not straight out of the oven). The egg & cheese interior, with speckles of sweet onion, spring onion, juicy capsicum and… … … where’s the bacon? I think they must have been trying to spite me, anticipating my need for a “healthy meal”, so removing all traces of salty-fatty-smoky bacon. But in all truth, it did lack the savoury depth required from the bacon to lift the quiche’s flavours.

Condiments of tomato sauce – with sweet caramelised onions – were a treat with both the quiche and the chips. On that point, the chips were definitely worth a mention. They were surprisingly good and fresh out of the fryer. They had a just ever so slightly crisp and light batter (almost tempura-like) with a soft fluffy potato middle. These were certainly a guilty pleasure!

Quiche, salad & chips

The fresh mix of salad with heaps of greens, bean shoots (boo for leaving the roots on), fresh acidic onion, succulent red capsicum and cherry tomatoes , drizzled with a light vinaigrette. Ah, a nice way to add fibre to my meal =).

Latte – strong roasty flavours mmm, but lacked a little creamy softness from the milk component.
Ah… this is the life, enjoying a leisurely lunch on a warm spring day!!!

Also bought a couple of muffins (to share at work, not just for myself of course) – apple & cinnamon & mixed berry. Their muffins though tasty lacked that indulgent level of buttery & moist goodness. Seems like I’m on a healthy options (somewhat unintended) roll today…

Rating: Yummy – pretty cheap meal for quite a generous serving! (and maybe a yummy+1 for the chips)

Unpleasant: damn upset my desire to eat; Average: palatable but many shortcomings; Yummy: a pleasant experience; Yummy +1: mouth-watering like rain; Yummy +2: exquisite flavours that hit all the right notes; Divine: sheer culinary perfection!

Interesting Facts: Dietary fibre
Note: I thought I’d put this at the end to avoid putting everyone off everyone’s mood for food =PWhat is it?
It’s the indigestible portion of plant foods, commonly referred to as roughage.

Benefits?
Good for heart & blood: regulates blood sugar levels, lowers the BAD cholesterol.
Promotes regularity of food passage (prevent constipation) and may reduce appetite (can help control weight).
Reduce risk of colorectal cancer

So what’s high in fibre?
Vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fruits (especially the skin), fibre supplementation (if you’re finding it all too much to try eating all the above then please do get some Metamucil =P).

How much?
20–35 g/day – huhz??? Too hard to calculate, BUT if anyone is interested in trying to calculate how much fiber your current diet provides – then feel free to visit : Mr Dr. Essentially, eat a balanced diet and try to fit in lots of fruit, veggies and whole grain stuff (maybe I should post some healthy but tasty recipes at some point). And if you’re having trouble with your bowels, then you are most likely LOW in fibre! Caution: please drink plenty of water, as a low water intake with high fiber can CAUSE constipation.
